Few neighborhoods in Barcelona have transformed as dramatically as El Raval.
Once located outside the medieval city walls, this district has long been a place of contrasts — from convents and hospitals to sailors’ taverns, bohemian cafés and underground movements. Today, it stands as one of the most vibrant and the center of urban culture and contemporary art.
On this immersive private tour, we explore the layered history of El Raval — a neighbourhood shaped by migration, creativity, resilience and reinvention.
We begin near the historic Hospital de la Santa Creu, once one of Europe’s most important medieval hospitals, and walk through streets that witnessed centuries of social change. We’ll talk about the industrial era, the rise of the working class & anarchism, the controversial years when Raval was known as “Barrio Chino,” and its artistic rebirth in the late 20th century.
Along the way, we’ll discover hidden courtyards, contemporary art spaces and iconic cultural institutions such as the MACBA, which helped redefine the neighborhood’s identity.
El Raval is not a postcard version of Barcelona. It is real, complex, raw — and deeply human.
